ER70S-2 VS ER70S-6
AWS SFA 5.18 ER70S-2/ER70S-6 are mild steel welding filler wires. The filler wire designation is explained as shown. But let us know the difference between ER70S-2 and ER70S-6 where the only difference in designation is the number after the dash whether it is 2 or 6 and this difference can be explained as below:
2: stands for the chemical designator which refers to the welding wire containing other deoxidizers in addition to manganese (0.9%-1.4%) and silicon (0.4%-0.7%) including titanium (0.02%-0.12), zirconium (0.05%-0.15%) and aluminum (0.05%-0.15%).
6: stands for the chemical designator which refers to the welding wire containing manganese (1.4%-1.85%) and silicon (0.8%-1.15%) as deoxidizers.
ER2594 VS ER2209 VS ER308
The AWS SFA5.9 ER2594, ER2209 and ER308 are stainless steel wires. The difference between these welding filler wires is explained as follows:
ER308: The nominal composition (wt. %) of this classification is 21 Cr, 10 Ni. Commercial specifications for filler and base metals vary in the minimum alloy requirements; consequently, the names 18-8, 19-9, and 20-10 are often associated with filler metals of this classification. Deposits of such alloy is of fully austenitic microstructure. This classification is most often used to weld base metals of similar composition, in particular, Type 304.
ER2209: The nominal chemical composition (wt. %) of this wire is Cr (22.5%), Ni (8.5%), Mo (3%), N (0.15%). Filler metal of this classification is used primarily to weld duplex stainless steels which contain approximately chromium (22%) such as UNS S31803 and S32205 and lean duplex stainless steels such as UNS S32101 and S32304. Deposited weld metals of this wire have “duplex” microstructures consisting of an austenite-ferrite matrix. The deposited weld metals of such wires are characterized by high tensile strength, high resistance to stress corrosion cracking SCC, and high improvement in pitting resistance as compared to these properties in austenitic stainless steels such as 304L.
ER2594: The nominal chemical composition (wt. %) of deposited weld metal of this wire is Cr (22.5%), Ni (9.2%), Mo (3.5%), N (0.25%). The pitting resistance equivalent (PREN) of deposited weld metal of this wire is at least 40, that is why it is called super duplex stainless steel. The PREN is the sum of the Cr + 3.3(Mo + 0.5 W) + 16 N. This number is an indicator of pitting resistance to environments containing aqueous chloride. This wire is used for the welding of super duplex stainless steels: UNS S32750 and 32760, UNS J93380, and J93404. It can also be used for the welding of UNS S32550, J93370, and J93372 when they are used in environments not containing sulfuric acids in service. It can also be used for joining of dissimilar welding of carbon and low alloy steels to duplex stainless steels as well as to weld “standard” duplex stainless steel such as UNS S32205 and J92205 especially for root passes in pipe joints.
